Helping Girls Manage Menstruation with Confidence

Preparing schoolgirls with practical menstrual health education through the wider Behaviour Change for Health program.

For a girl approaching her first period, practical information can make a difference to how prepared she feels. Understanding menstruation is one need; knowing how to manage it at school, ask for help, and use menstrual products is another.

Through the Behaviour Change for Health Greentech Hub, undertook initiatives to facilitate menstrual health education as part of important part of the school WASH response. So far, Greentech trained both girls and boys MHM on understanding, living with it, helping and getting used for as part of the girls life circle.

The sessions covered managing menstruation hygienically, using sanitary pads, and appropriate disposal. Demonstrations included disposable and reusable pads, giving learners an opportunity to understand different products. The training also addressed myths and fears surrounding menstruation and encouraged girls to share concerns and seek support.

This practical focus responded to gaps identified in the project reports. General classroom teaching did not always provide the guidance girls needed to manage menstruation in daily life. School health teachers and matrons were recognised as important sources of continuing support.

The project paired education with attention to privacy and menstrual hygiene facilities. This reflected an important project lesson: girls need both clear information and a school environment where they can act on it.

By making menstrual health part of school hygiene work, the project aimed to help girls feel more informed, supported, and confident throughout the school day. Itandula how sounds to have a cream of students who understand MHM and ready to help others especially new comers (form one) and girls who gets in MP for their first time.
