Small Habits, Lasting Change: Lessons from Schools

Lessons from the project show why hygiene education needs reliable facilities, supportive adults, and active participation from pupils.

The Behaviour Change for Health (BC4H) project offered Greentech Hub, and MSABI a practical lesson in how school hygiene improvements fit together. Each activity revealed connections between what children learn and what their school environment allows them to do.

Water availability was one example. Some schools struggled to maintain daily routines even where handwashing structures were present. This highlighted the need to plan for a dependable water supply alongside the facilities themselves.

Menstrual health work revealed a similar connection. Training helped girls understand how to manage menstruation, while private spaces addressed a different practical need. The collaboration’s reports emphasised the importance of combining these forms of support.

School Health Clubs added another dimension by giving pupils a continuing role in peer education. Teachers and school committees, meanwhile, needed the knowledge and responsibility to manage facilities and sustain learning. Engaging them early was identified as an important lesson.

The teams also learned from local communities. Adapting messages to cultural contexts and discussing sensitive subjects with care helped build acceptance. Joint planning between the two organisations supported coordination across the project areas.

These lessons offer a useful basis for future programmes. Lasting behaviour change requires attention to the daily conditions in which habits are formed: the water available, the privacy provided, the guidance offered, and the opportunities children have to participate.
