Keeping Hygiene Messages Visible Beyond Training Day

Posters, brochures, and positive messages on T-shirts helped schools reinforce hygiene education after organised sessions ended.

An organised training session gives learners time to focus on hygiene. Keeping that learning present in everyday school life requires continued reminders. Behaviour Change for Health used simple communication materials to support that work.

In Njombe and Iringa, Greentech Hub, formerly TAEEs, prepared and distributed educational materials covering handwashing, disease prevention, and menstrual hygiene. As part of the implementation strategy, the project also produced materials and T-shirts carrying positive behaviour-change messages.

These resources supported a programme that combined direct teaching, peer learning, and improvements to facilities. Posters and brochures gave schools material they could return to, while the messages supported discussions about practical hygiene habits.

The approach paid attention to how information was communicated as well as what it contained. The project emphasized the importance of adapting messages to local culture and using straightforward materials that could reinforce learning at home.

For School Health Clubs, communication resources complemented the activities through which children encouraged classmates and shared what they had learned. They formed part of a wider effort to keep hygiene education active between visits from project teams.

The practical field experience showed why communication needs to continue throughout a behaviour-change programme. Clear, accessible reminders give schools another way to revisit learning and connect it with daily routines.
